What is EMDR in a Nutshell?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective treatment for depression, anxiety, panic attacks, addictions, sexual and physical abuse as well as a host of other disorders. EMDR is recognised globally as the best evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and there are more clinical trials supporting it than any other therapy.

Twenty-six randomized controlled trials concluded that individuals show a reduction in somatic symptoms and negative cognitive distortions after a course of EMDR treatment. Studies show that individual find immediate relief from traumatic memories that become emotionally desensitised and less vivid. In fact, EMDR proved to be a more successful treatment when compared to the use of psychotropic medication.

The first protocol of EMDR therapy relies on the practitioner to put the individual into a very relaxed state using progressive muscle relaxation. The therapist conducts bi-lateral stimulation like the (left-to-right) eye movement we experience during our four hours of deep dream state sleep. During this time our Rapid Eye Movement (REM) assists us to filter the emotional experiences we have had during the day. These emotions are released through the REM sleep process allowing us to function normally the next day. However, when we experience adverse events sometimes this is not processed effectively leading to mood issues, disturbed sleep, rumination, and triggers.

The bilateral stimulation of the eyes allows us to recall distressing memories due to the enhanced episodic memory retrieval that occurs with REM.
The same eye movement process is used in EMDR to induce a stimulating effect by taxing the working memory. Flashback memories are targeted and as a result the physical memory is released from the body. The bilateral stimulation of the eyes also puts the left and right hemispheres of the brain into a full synchronised brain state improving cognitions, and free association. Feeling of despair, powerlessness, distrust and hopeless are reduced in the process.

EMDR offers long-lasting cognitive benefits in an effective and efficient way. A limiting belief can be changed effectively using EMDR therapy to transform self-perception, relationships with others and allows one to rationalise events in a significant way that produces feelings of relief, acceptance, and calm. Other benefits include improved sleep, a complete elimination of rumination and more positive outlook of life. For more details about EMDR go to EMDRAA
