The Benefits of Yoga Nidra – Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR)

Are you looking for a fast way to feel better? Yoga Nidra is a deeply regenerative practice that is equivalent to a four-hour power nap whilst offering a host of other amazing health benefits.

Yoga Nidra is an ancient meditative practise that has been recently labelled clinically as a Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) protocol. The goal of Yoga Nidra is to attain a hypnogogia, a relaxed but focused state between wakefulness and sleep.

The practice of NSDR slows down brain waves from alpha to theta, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the body to rejuvenate and heal itself.
NSDR assists with regeneration of the hippocampus, the memory retrieval and mood stabilising part of the brain by reducing cortisol (stress hormones). When the hippocampus is functioning properly it reduces our stress response. A weak hippocampus on the other hand makes us more susceptible to anxiety. Neuroscientific studies by Sara Lazar at Harvard University reported eight weeks of daily meditation practice can increase the size of the hippocampus.

Not only does NSDR reduces stress and anxiety, but it also helps with other health related issues. NSDR assists with insomnia and alleviates symptoms of many autoimmune disorders. It has been known to improve depression by increasing endorphin production. Neurotransmitters GABA and Serotonin are released in the body promoting a calming and anti-depressive effect. Cardiovascular improvements have also been clinically proven with regular NSDR. Development of cognitive function such as enhanced intuition, focus and creativity are also benefits of NSDR.

NSDR enhances all three realms of existence;
The Physical (biochemical and neuroplastic)
The Psychological– (cognition and mood state)
The Spiritual – (connection, wholeness and peace)

Within these three realms Nidra Yoga embodies the five dimensions of self; the memory body, physical body, higher consciousness, energetic body, and bliss body. The wholistic methodology of Nidra Yoga allow for a deep sense of wellbeing. Nidra Yoga should be done for 10 minutes to an hour regularly throughout the week to attain optimal results.
