The 5am Club- A Tale of Personal Development, Leadership and Greatness

The Five Am Club written by Robin Sharma is a remarkable book full to the brim with snippets of advice, strategies and leadership quotes that would benefit any budding entrepreneur.

This book is classified as a self-help book and I was initially reluctant to pick it up due to the the expectations required that the title indicates.  A fellow coach recommended this book and honestly at first the title just did repel me …. Was I resisting something?  I mean I did get up quite early sometimes……You know those folks who go for their last binge drink before they take the path of abstinence? I was, however, completely surprised to learn that this ‘help’ was wrapped up in a delightful fictional love story and tale of success.

Sharma wrote this book whilst travelling which may explain the very colourful details, charming landscapes and mouth-watering depictions that enliven the senses.  In fact, it is easy to submerge yourself into this story and actually almost believe you may also be travelling together with this lively bunch of characters.  I did find myself reminiscing on my travels through India and Italy…. whilst simultaneously attempting to grasp the non-stop flow of success tips, titbits of neuroscience and formulas for greatness.

Success education can sometimes feel a little dry and the 5AM Club is refreshingly not. I used to love fiction, and once upon a time read everything from Milan Kundera to Gabriel García Márquez.  I sadly gave it all away when I found my love for non-fiction, psychology and neurobiology.  Life is too short, so I made my choice to focus on this type of content that was in alignment with my career, content that allowed me to help more people and grow myself in my practice and as a person.

As I am a lover of Personal Development, I did recognise many gems of success that were woven into Sharma’s story but his version of this lifechanging material is both so witty and compelling that it was just great to rediscover them again.

The Five AM club has the same embellishment and poetic wordiness of the greatest novelists that I used to read whilst at the same time being jam packed with personal development and leadership knowledge that any businessperson would love.  It is for this reason that I acknowledge The 5am Club as an extraordinary feat for having combined great success education with a fun, fruity and easily digestible story.

In, fact the only thing I didn’t like about the book was the title  …The Five Am Club is misleading and does not do its content justice….so lastly am I getting up at this time every day? Somewhere between 5.15 – 5.45 works for me…the big change for me though is now I also get up at this time on weekends..my weekends appear to last much longer and are more productive!
