So, what is the Reticular Activating System?
The Reticular Activating System (RAS) regulates our behavioural arousal, motivation and ability to link our consciousness with our unconscious. When you tap into to the powerful resources of the RAS you can achieve or obtain your hearts desires with more precision and exactitude whether it be peace of mind, a healthy relationship or your dream car.
The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a bundle of neurons that sit in the brain stem at the top of the spinal column. The RAS extends two inches high and is the diameter of a pencil. All our senses excluding our sense of smell are wired directly to the neuronetwork that is our RAS.
The role of the RAS is to ensure your brain is protected from receiving too much information. Our brains scan three trillion pieces of information each day and the RAS works like a bouncer or a gatekeeper only allowing the important and necessary data in through the door of the conscious mind.
When we are eating in a busy restaurant, we are able to tune out the white noise so we can hear our friend speaking to us. As soon as I make the decision to buy a car, deciding on the exact make and colour, I will then see that car on the road everywhere. The function of the RAS is to fine tune your point of focus and connect the subconscious part of our brain with the conscious part.
If we harness the energy of the RAS, we can become more intentional, more efficient and more effective in our lives. We can even re-invent our belief system as well as build our resilience and self-worth. Instead of looking for a job in the classifieds and hoping something suitable turns up we can channel our energy and get more clarity with what type of job you want first. If you do this intentionally before your job seeking endeavour your RAS will help you to weed out unsuitable jobs throughout the process and assist you in picking out the ones that resonate. You become a super attractor by firstly visualising the details of what it is you want.
So how do we harness this energy to our best ability and supercharge this powerful part of the brain? Neuroscientific research shows that the practice of gratitude can rewire the brain and improve mental health. Research over the last two decades reports that people are generally happier when they focus each day on what they are grateful for. Meditation or visualisation are equally effective for harnessing the energy of the RAS but there is an even better way to amplify the gratitude ritual.
Here is a little RAS exercise of mine that unlocks your power of intention and capacity to be a deliberate creator. If done habitually this exercise will also promote peace of mind and confidence in any area you need it most.
Write down five things you are grateful for every day and five things that you are grateful for that you haven’t received yet. When you write down what you haven’t received yet you are engaging the RAS Reticular Activating to refine your visualisation skills needed to carve out your future.
When you write down what you are grateful of that you haven’t received yet such as a future goal like “I am grateful that I make $200,000 per anum” or “I am grateful to be in a loving and healthy relationship” in a notebook you are both refining your point of attraction and creating a contract with yourself. Your RAS works best when you are intentional and write it down just like when you take a shopping list to the supermarket.
It gradually becomes harder to find things that you are grateful for that you haven’t received yet and you will find that you will naturally start to repeat what is already on your list. This is a good thing…. These signify what is most important to you and therefore a priority. These messages are the things that you will become naturally more motivated to take action on.
Spend no more than five minutes each day by expanding your Reticular Activating System and watch how much more of a deliberate creator you become.
