Controlled breathing has been used for centuries as an essential component of martial arts, eastern practices, and Shamanic rituals used to improve mental focus, physical ability, and spiritual consciousness. Life force energy, chi, prana or whatever you choose to call it can be enhanced using Breathwork techniques. It is incredible to think that we can not only shift emotional and physical energy through the body with the power of breath but even change our self-concept and pure potentiality.
Not only has Breathwork been noted for its numerous health benefits ranging from boosting immunity and reducing insomnia. It has also been noted for its psychological benefits such as reducing anxiety and healing emotional pain by shifting autonomic states. In fact, one randomised, controlled study found that shorter bouts of Breathwork long-term can potentially improve stress management and wellbeing over longer bouts of meditation. However, Breathwork also has a significant effect on our self-concept and state of consciousness. Extensive research on Breathwork continues and It has been scientifically proven to have potential life-changing effects. Breathwork without a doubt should therefore be a practice we incorporate into our daily lives for the goal of personal development and transformational growth.
Psychiatrist Stanislav Grof’s introduction of Holographic breathing in a clinical setting also supports Breathwork as an evidence-based practice for psychological wellbeing and self-actualisation. Grof’s application of breathwork with his clients showed evidence that a patient was able to experience altered states of consciousness without the use of drugs. His approach of both western and eastern modalities included accelerated breathing, body work and music to release emotional blocks. Grof’s research found that certain breathwork techniques induced deep states of consciousness and helped to remove emotional blockages from the body.
Breathwork is a tool that bridges “the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science, and reconciles the differences between Eastern spirituality and Western pragmatism.” – Stan Grof
